Why We Love This Recipe

This dish is the definition of simple, cozy comfort — and with the recent release of our Umami Seasoning blend, we wanted to share one of Jason’s (the owner’s) favorite ways to use it.

What is "umami?" We covered the "umami" flavor in another blog post if you'd like to learn more. Check that out here.

The savory depth from our mushroom-forward blend makes this rice incredibly flavorful while staying minimal, fast, and budget-friendly. It also serves as a wonderful natural alternative to MSG, delivering many of the same rich, savory notes without additives.

This recipe is very approachable for all cooking levels and makes an easy, low-cost meal for college students, busy families, or anyone who needs something warm and delicious in a pinch. A cup of rice + a sprinkle of seasoning = a surprisingly gourmet-tasting bowl of comfort.

It’s nourishing, satisfying, and endlessly customizable — a pantry-friendly staple you’ll want to make again and again.

Ingredients

For the Rice

  • 1 cup jasmine rice (or any long-grain rice), rinsed

  • 1 cup water

  • 1 teaspoon Emory Market Gardens Umami Seasoning (add more to taste) available to purchase here

  • 1 tablespoon butter or neutral oil (optional, but recommended for richness)

  • Salt to taste (optional — the seasoning already contains some)

Stovetop Instructions

  1. Rinse the rice
Rinse under cool water until the water runs mostly clear to remove excess starch.

  2. Combine ingredients
Add the rinsed rice, water, butter or oil (optional), Umami Seasoning, and a small pinch of salt to a medium saucepan.

  3. Bring to a simmer
Heat over medium-high until the water begins to bubble.

  4. Cover and cook
Reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for 15 minutes without lifting the lid.

  5. Rest and fluff
Remove from heat and let sit for 5 minutes, then fluff with a fork.

Instant Pot Instructions

  1. Rinse the rice
Rinse under cool water until mostly clear.

  2. Add ingredients
Add rice, water (1:1 ratio), Umami Seasoning, and butter/oil if using.

  3. Pressure cook
Set to High Pressure for 5 minutes.

  4. Natural release
Let pressure release naturally for 10 minutes, then switch the valve to release any remaining steam.

  5. Fluff and serve
Open the lid and fluff the rice with a fork before serving.

Optional Customizations

  • Add veggies: peas, spinach, mushrooms, or roasted vegetables

  • Make it a meal: fried egg, tofu, chicken, or sautéed greens

  • Boost flavor: sprinkle extra Umami Seasoning after cooking

  • Try other grains: basmati or long-grain brown rice (adjust cooking time)

What to Serve With This Dish

  • Stir-fries or sautéed vegetables

  • Grilled or roasted meats

  • Mushroom-forward dishes

  • Cozy soups and stews

  • Eggs for a comforting breakfast

Or enjoy it totally on its own — the simplest bowl of savory comfort.
