Why We Love This Recipe

If you’ve never roasted turnips before, you’re in for a treat. This simple recipe turns humble roots into something golden, aromatic, and downright comforting. The turnips caramelize beautifully in the oven, bringing out their subtle sweetness, while thyme, rosemary, and garlic powder add that classic fall flavor.

We like to finish ours with a sprinkle of Emory Market Gardens Mushroom Seasoning for a touch of umami—but it’s optional if you prefer to keep things classic. These roasted turnips make a perfect side dish for any meal and pair wonderfully with roasted chicken, grilled vegetables, or a cozy bowl of soup.

Ingredients

Vegetables & Seasoning

  • 1½ pounds turnips, peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme (or 1 tablespoon fresh)

  • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary (or 1 tablespoon fresh)

  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

  • ½ teaspoon Emory Market Gardens Mushroom Seasoning (optional, for extra umami)

  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven
Set your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup.

2. Season the turnips
In a large bowl, toss the turnip cubes with olive oil, thyme, rosemary, garlic powder, mushroom seasoning (if using), salt, and pepper until evenly coated.

3. Roast to perfection
Spread the turnips out in a single layer on your prepared baking sheet. Roast for 25–30 minutes, flipping once halfway through, until the edges are golden and the centers are fork-tender.

4. Serve and enjoy
Remove from the oven and serve warm. These roasted turnips are wonderful on their own or alongside your favorite fall dishes.

Optional Customizations

  • Add more veggies: Mix in carrots, parsnips, or sweet potatoes for color and variety.

  • Make it creamy: Drizzle with a bit of tahini-lemon dressing or yogurt sauce before serving.

  • Boost the flavor: A sprinkle of fresh herbs or a squeeze of lemon at the end brightens everything up.

What to Serve With This Dish

Simple Roasted Turnips pair beautifully with:

  • Grilled or roasted meats

  • A hearty vegetable stew or mushroom soup
